In 2015, Haberfield Public School set up a Journalism Extension Unit as a way to enhance gifted and talented students’ academic and socio-emotional development.
The unit contains a series of cross-stage, ability-based groups that cater for students from Years 1 to 6. These groups have been designed to meet the unique needs of gifted and talented learners by providing students with access to like-minded peers, who share their interest and skills in the area of Journalism.

Debating
Each year Haberfield Public School’s debating teams compete in the Premier’s Debating Challenge. As part of the program, the students participate in weekly training workshops designed to refine their skills. It provides a great opportunity for students to develop their public speaking skills as they learn to argue a case logically with supporting evidence.
Reading buddies
In 2012, Haberfield Public School started the Reading Buddies program with the goal assisting students to consolidate strategies acquired during the Reading Recovery program. Year 5 students are trained to tutor younger students who required reading support.
Maths buddies
In 2017, Haberfield Public School started the Maths Buddies program. This program involves Year 5 students mentoring students in Years 2 and 3 with the goal of refining their mathematical skills. The Year 2 and 3 students meet once a week with their mentor before school where they are provided with opportunities to explore mathematical concepts through hands on and online games.
Robotics
In 2016, Haberfield introduced two trial robotics programs. These initial programs were so successful that in 2017 an additional program was created. Students participating in the programs are provided with opportunities to work collaboratively and independently to:
- Explore programming concepts
- Persist with challenging robotics activities
- Play, create and control their own robotics creations
- Develop computational thinking skills
