Gunbu Mandala - Hand Washing Song Story
Gunbu Mandala - Hand Washing Song - a collaboration with Hope Vale state school part of the Good to Great SchoolAustralia, on Cape York Queensland and Haberfield Public School in NSW, Sydney Australia.
- In March 2020 it became clear that a planned trip to Hope Vale school in QLD, as part of the National Music Teacher Mentoring Program could not go ahead becuase of the Covid-19 outbreak around the world.
- Later in March I was sent a recording sung by well know Aboriginal leader, Noel Pearson which he learnt as a boy in Guugu Yimithirr the indigenous language of Hope Vale, which was about 'Washing Hands' to prevent cataching a virus. I was asked to arrange and transcribe the song as a a way to continue the music education collaboration between the 2 schools. Here is the recording which was sent to me sung by Noel Pearson click here to listen.
- I arranged the song for students at Haberfield PS and Hope Vale which can be viewed here
- This arrangement was sent to Hope Vale where the music teacher Trent Grayson with whom I had collaborated with in 2018 and 2019, did an arrangement for his students in Hope Vale based on the my arrangement click here.
- After watching and hearing the wonderful performance by the students of Hope Vale the students at Haberfield Public School, who by early April were mostly learning remotely recorded and performed this version of Gunbu Mandala click here
- The collabaoration finally was combined with the two versions combined with this as the result click here.
- A Covid-19 response by two schools responding in Music.
